Curt Weldon, School visits and academic meetings
Curt Weldon, School visits and academic meetings

On February 15, 2006, Curt Weldon hosted Drexel University students on the hill. The students met with House Representatives as well as international ambassadors who talked to the group about various domestic and international issues related to education, economics, security and foreign affairs. The event is another way Congressman Weldon tries to link education with practical experience for the students in our district’s schools and universities.

On May 24, 2006, Congressman Weldon visited the students at the Armenian Sisters Academy in Radnor, Pa. to talk to them about the importance of embracing foreign cultures and learning languages from around the globe.

Congressman Weldon highlighted his travels and interests in the former Soviet Union for the students. He also spoke about his background as a teacher in the Delaware County public school system and as a volunteer firefighter. As a member of the Congressional Armenian Caucus, has supported foreign and humanitarian aid to Armenia.
On March 22, 2006, Congressman Weldon spoke at the West Chester University Student Government Association Legislative Affairs Dinner. An essential part of promoting and supporting the education in our district is a direct link between the students and their elective representative. Curt Weldon talked to the students about the importance of participating in both local and federal government as well as discussing his time as a student at West Chester University and drawing important parallels between the academic needs and requirements of his tenure as a student and today’s generation.
On July 5, 2006, Congressman Weldon spoke to educators from across the nation at the Benjamin Franklin and the Invention of America Workshop today at Villanova University. Congressman discussed the importance of innovation in teaching and making better use of federal resources. As an educator, Congressman believes that empowering our teachers to provide the most worthwhile educational experiences for our students is one of the most vital responsibilities of Congress. Speaking to several small groups of educators from 30 States, Congressman Weldon highlighted the 7th District’s annual Teachers Night, during which U.S. government officials meet with teachers from all over the District to describe how the federal government can help educators.

In Congress, Congressman Weldon has worked extensively to meet the needs of American teachers and to improve the quality of educational opportunities and school environment for students. He recently voted in support of a bill that would require federal financial assistance information to be available for public access on the Internet (H.R. 5060). The bill would streamline the financial aid process for thousands of American families by allowing students seeking federal financial aid to access a database of information about grant and aid packages as well as maintain and track their own aid packages. Weldon also recently helped to pass a bill that would strengthen faculty background checks in America’s schools (H.R. 4894). This bipartisan piece of legislation would provide schools with access to national criminal data bases to obtain criminal information when hiring teachers and staff.
On January 9, 2006, Congressman Weldon visited the Connelly Center at the Villanova University to personally congratulate 19 students from 14 different schools who successfully received his nomination to one of the four federal service academies - Military Academy, Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, and Merchant Marine Academy. The event was sponsored by Boeing Corporation and hosted by Villanova University. Congressman Weldon acknowledged the nominees’ achievements, presented each with a certificate of nomination, and spoke with each individual, their families, and representatives from their schools.

On April 23, 2006, Congressman Weldon spoke at the Service Academy Information day at the Valley Forge Military Academy in Wayne, PA. The event was held to provide all interested students, parents, and school officials an opportunity to find out information on the missions and entrance requirements of the five federal service academies. Congressman greeted attendees and spoke on the importance of identifying the best individuals who will eventually attend the service academies.

On January 23, and March 27, 2006 Congressman Weldon hosted the 7th Congressional District Student Leadership Conference, with the purpose of exposing students to many different aspects of leadership. These two meetings focused on economic development in the region and community outreach.

On May 12, 2006, Congressman Weldon hosted the Seventh Congressional District Art Competition, in which a Best of Show winner was chosen, Aleksandra Korecka of Haverford High School. Her artwork will be hung in the Capitol building for an entire year. Awards were also given out to first, second and third place winners in six different categories.

On November 1, 2005, Congressman Weldon organized the 7th Congressional District Teacher’s Night. The event was held at Villanova University and was coordinated with the Intermediate Units of Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery counties. This event was designed to provide kindergarten through twelfth grade teachers and PTAs an opportunity to tap into resources on the local, state, and federal levels that can be taken back to the classroom – programs and organizations that can enhance the learning environment, creating a more rewarding experience for teachers and students alike. This event drew dozens of teachers and vendors from the state and across the country.

Congressman values the presence of strong community college in our district, and supports their efforts to educate the ever growing numbers of college students and mid-career professionals and working moms and dads who wish to strengthen their knowledge and make themselves more competitive in our growing economy. This session, he joined the Community College caucus which promotes the interest of community colleges throughout the nation. The first inaugural meeting of this Caucus will take place on July 20, 2006.
